What did you learn?

Students who participated in this multimedia project comment on what they've learned about new media's impact on their lives

Matthew Branch:
In my time being here I have learned many different techniques for Journalism. I have also learned how to use different programs and their uses. I learned how to use Soundslides and Audacity. I used some of the same programs and techniques that professionals use. I learned that when making a Soundslide that you have to stay relevant to the point of the slides. I also found out that you can make a short news package with Soundslides. There is more to Soundslides than just what it seems. At first, my thought was that this was going to be so easy, but during the process of making the project I changed my view on it. Doing Soundslides was very fun and a lot of work.

During this experience I had to interview people. I’ve learned that it takes a brave, courageous person to be a reporter. You have to be ready to go up to someone and ask them questions. Interviewing people was easier after I got used to just walking up to people and asking them questions. This experience has helped me to be more outgoing and allowed me to be less shy.

Being here has changed my opinion on Journalism. I used to think that journalism was boring and was only about the news. I have met great people, learned new things, and had fun doing the work they gave me. I also learned that using social media you can do many things such as advertise and stay connected with friends and family.

In the past three days we have worked with two multimedia programs, Soundslides and Audacity. I have worked with similar programs, but both of these programs were new to me. I learned about referencing, Nat sound, and a lower thirds, while working with Soundslides. I found out that when making an effective Soundslide, it is recommended to focus mainly on one topic or person. Also, a variety of angles, close up shots, and medium shots, helps provoke empathy and emotions. I feel as if the programs we have been using will not only help me now, but in the future as well.

“Yeah, I text and drive. Even my grandma will randomly answer a text while driving.”

The quote above tells it all, texting and driving have become a part of everyday life. Even I am guilty of pulling out my phone during a red light, at a stop light, or even while riding down the road. Although I do it myself, I was shocked to see how many people admitted  they text while driving. Most people know that what they’re doing is dangerous and they are taking a risk, but they call themselves “pros” and think nothing will happen. What they don’t know is texting causes 21% of car accidents and that rises 4% each year. By researching this topic and completing this project, I have definitely cut back, if not eliminated texting while behind the wheel. I hope that when people watch the video, it will open their eyes to the topic, or at least catch their eye.
